IELTS Academic Reading Skills Study Guide

Review the main ideas in short, simple steps. Then test yourself on what you learned.

What to focus on first

  • Read the question before rereading the passage for clues.
  • Scan for dates, names and important words, then read the whole nearby sentence.
  • Avoid using general knowledge if the passage says something different.
  • These short passages help practise skills; they are not a full 60-minute IELTS test.
  • For realistic time and task types, try the official IELTS sample tasks linked below.

Topics in this course

  1. Finding details

Scan the passage for a key name, date or phrase. Read the surrounding sentence before you choose an answer.

  2. Main ideas

Ask what the paragraph mainly explains. Do not choose an option just because it repeats a memorable phrase.

  3. Inference

Only infer what the passage supports. Outside knowledge may be true but still irrelevant to the question.

  4. Vocabulary in context

Read the sentence before and after an unfamiliar word. Nearby clues can reveal its meaning and tone.
